Section 66 C.  Punishment for identity theft

Whoever, fraudulently or dishonestly make use of the electronic signature, password or any other unique identification feature of any other person, shall be punished with

  • imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years and
  • shall also be liable to fine which may extend to rupees one lakh

Summary

This section deals with misuse of the identification of another person to gain access or to do some act, which was otherwise not authorized to be done.

Examples

  • An employee who finds a lost electronic key of his manager’s cabin, uses that key to open his manager’s cabin without the manager’s permission or without authority.
