Who is a gazetted officer?

A Gazetted Officer is an officer who is appointed by a Gazette Notification of the relevant State or Central Government.

What authority does the gazetted officer have?

The Gazetted Officer has the authority to attest documents under his own seal and signature.

Defence

  • Technical Officer

Rank of Captain and above in the Navy and equivalent rank in any other armed forces.

Police

  • Addl. Commissioner or Deputy Superintendent and above (3 stars and above)

Is an MLA, Municipal Councillor, Municipal Corporator a Gazetted Officer?

No, they are only elected representatives and not Gazetted Officers. They are not in the employment of the Government. Only designated Government employees can be Gazetted Officers.
